Mayor Chase-Green unanimously re-elected – Akeem Peter is New Deputy Mayor
DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, March 15, 2018
Patricia Chase-Green was today unanimously re-elected Mayor of Georgetown for the third consecutive year, while Akeem Peter was voted as the Deputy. This took place at the annual in-house elections in the Chambers of City Hall.
Unlike the position of Mayor, which has seen Chase-Green holding the seat for three consecutive years, the post of Deputy Mayor has changed hands three times. The post was first held by Councillor, Sherod Duncan, who was elected at the last local government elections. Then it was held by Lionel Jaikarran who served for one year.
Mayor Chase-Green called on the councillors to work together for the good of the citizenry of Georgetown. She acknowledged that the past two years have been challenging, as will be her third year, which leads into the next Local Government Elections.
Nevertheless, the re-elected mayor is optimistic that with unity, the council will be able to provide the type of city that the country can be proud of.
“It is not about your ego; it is not about you; it is about the service that you give to your constituency and to the people who have elected you and if you could only think about them, this council and this city of Georgetown will move to better development. Let us work together. Let us make Georgetown the place we would like it to be for the future generations,” Chase-Green said.
The new Deputy Mayor also echoed her sentiments for unity as he called on the councillors to put their differences aside and work for the greater good of the city.
“I am here because I am a servant of the city and of the people and I urge that we all have that same outlook on our positions and that as we serve, our greatness will come forth in that service.”
He also reminded the councillors of the role they were elected to play, “this is not about politics, this is about service and we are all here to be servants and also councillors of the city of Georgetown.”
Both terms for Chase-Green and Peter will officially commence from April 1, 2018.
