The Ministry of Communities is preparing to expand its Green Generation Guyana (3G) programme through partnerships with relevant stakeholders.

The public education campaign which has been was organised by the ministry’s Sanitation Management Unit is aimed at raising awareness and promoting improved solid-waste management in the home and community. The initiative largely sensitises children on the basics of waste management, including waste separation, composting and recycling.

Danielle Campbell-Lowe, Public Relations Officer (PRO) attached to the Ministry of Communities.

Thus far, the 3Gs programme has reached more than 5,830 students in more than 45 schools across nine municipalities. Over 900 bins were handed over to minibus operators to assist in curbing the habit of passengers who throw garbage out the windows while over 837 bins were distributed to schools for recycling purposes.

Speaking with the Department of Public Information Danielle Campbell-Lowe, Public Relations Officer (PRO) attached to the ministry said the collaboration with stakeholders will allow the ministry to continue its work of educating the nation’s future leaders through fora such as outreaches and exhibitions among others.

According to Campbell-Lowe said that follow up exercises will be conducted to determine the effectiveness of the bins-for-minibus project as well as those exposed to the awareness programme. These include the various municipalities partnering with the ministry to enhance green parks through, for example, the use of recycled tyres among other measures.

She said the ministry also plans to utilise this year’s Regional and Agricultural Commercial Exhibitions (RACE) to sensitise as many citizens as possible about the benefits of healthy living and green lifestyles.

The PRO said the decision was taken to continue with promotion through the airwaves. “Recognising the importance of the radio, we thought that it would be helpful to continue the use of the radio serial drama Merundoi since over the years it has attracted a wide audience of housewives, vendors, taxi drivers and other listeners to the ministry’s sanitation agenda…the 3Gs programme was also taken to non-governmental organisations, religious bodies and women’s groups; all of whom have expressed an interest in getting on board,” Campbell-Lowe said.

Launched in August 2016, the initiative hopes to develop a new generation of citizens who will grow up with an environmental consciousness and habits that are green and sustainable.
