Mocha/Arcadia gets ICT Hub
DPI, Guyana, Saturday, February 03, 2018
The community of Mocha/Arcadia on the East Bank Demerara has received an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Hub at the Community Centre.
The centre is located in the compound of the Mocha/Arcadia Primary school. Much emphasis has been placed on developing the small community, approximately 4,000 persons.
“Technology is changing rapidly. When you look at the world it gives [the] opportunity to people regardless for where you are,” this was the advice given to the residents by Minister of Public Telecommunication Cathy Hughes, as she explained the numerous benefits that the hub offers to all, young and the not so young.
“Education is the one thing that can change the prospects of your child. You have the opportunity with the hub, for that child to grow,” Minister Hughes told residents.
She added that the internet enables persons to connect with others worldwide, whether through online classes, business ventures, or socializing. She revealed that the ministry will be providing learning materials in the coming weeks; List of 1000 questions- grade 6 assessment, and CSEC pre-questions for students on the computers.
This project is a collaboration with the Ministry of Public Telecommunications (MoPT), the National Data Management Authority (NDMA).
Phillip Walcott, Director of Community Development and Social Management of the NDMA, announced that very soon the ministry will launch a project to train volunteers in the areas with the ICT Hub. This is to ensure that persons can be better assisted with the technology. The programme will entail basic management of the equipment, basic troubleshooting knowledge, and training on how to manage volunteers.
It was explained that the hub has some 20 laptops and a team of 12 persons to manage and monitor the operations. According to Barbara Boyce, Chairman, Management Committee, the hub will also be equipped with a printer soon. “We had a bumpy journey to this day, but we are here and very grateful.”
While commending the initiative, Boyce highlighted the need for individuals with the technological background to help with the ICT hub.
The newly established hub provides free WiFi, mentors, consultation and support, computer training, and the opportunity to conduct research.
