More Esau and Jacob households to get potable water

Some $2.6 million is being spent to provide an additional 15 households within the Esau and Jacob community, Mahaicony, with access to potable water for the first time.

Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Hon. Susan Rodrigues had asked for an assessment to be done following complaints from several residents in the area. Work to remedy the situation began immediately after a source to supply those households with potable water was found.

The project started about a week ago with a connection from the Strath Campbell Pump Station at Branch Road Mahaicony. Some 71 lengths of pipes are being installed with a total of 15 individual service connections. The installation and connection to the main distribution network are expected to be completed within another week.

The work is being done by Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) staff with assistance from Pure Harvest Incorporated.

The GWI has received an allocation of $2.8 billion in this year’s Budget. Over the coming months, several communities in the 10 administrative regions will be served with potable water as the Government continues to focus on reaching unserved areas.

Several major water distribution projects have been catered for in the Budget with provisions for sanitation interventions, the drilling of new wells, water supply improvement projects on the coastland and hinterland, as well as water treatment plants for several communities.
