The people of Region Five, Mahaica-Berbice have much to celebrate on the 49th anniversary of Guyana attaining Republican status.

This was the message of Minister of Citizenship Winston Felix to the large gathering that attended the flag raising ceremony at Fort Wellington, West Coast Berbice to usher in this anniversary Friday night last.

In his feature address, the Minister detailed the improvements in the quality of life of citizens in the region as a result of increases in spending in the areas of health, education, agriculture and public works by the Coalition Government since it took office in 2015.

“We have had new schools in Region Five; earthen dams have been transformed into asphaltic surface roads; drainage for the villages have been improved to the extent that flooding will soon be a thing of the past and our public servants have benefited from unprecedented increases in wages and salaries since this Government took office.”

The Minister also noted that the development of the Mahaica-Berbice region was not confined to the coastal areas but also included riverain communities as well. He cited the Arawak Community of Moraikobai, ninety miles up the Mahaicony River as one of these communities which have benefited from the Government’s thrust to improve the quality of life of all its citizens.

“We did the hard work and so I urge you to celebrate as we observe this great milestone in the forward movement and development of our beloved country.”

The programme was also spiced with cultural events including hip hop dancing by some energetic youths, performances by the Berbice Delights Dance Group, chutney songs by Bunty Singh, poetry reading and prayers by representatives of the Christian, Hindu and Muslim faiths prior to the actual flag-raising at midnight.

The hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead was preceded by the traditional March Past of members of the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Peoples Militia.

Also, in attendance was Member of Parliament for Region Five, Jennifer Wade, Regional Executive Officer, Ovid Morrison, Regional Vice Chairman, Rion Peters.
