Mother of three, Edelle Smith was today allocated a house lot after applying since 2012. Smith was first to be allocated her plot of land in Onderneeming at the ‘Government comes to you’ outreach in Essequibo, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam Region).

The mother of three boys, ages eleven, seven and three months, was overjoyed with the news.

According to Smith, she has been renting a house in Sparendaam on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) for several years. She later moved with her husband and children to Essequibo where she continues to pay rent and is now happy that this will soon be a thing of the past. Determined to get a lot of her own, Smith was at the outreach carrying her youngest child over her shoulder. She told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that she has been praying for this opportunity and more so, the good news that followed. Her letter of allocation was issued by the recently appointed Minister within the Ministry of Communities, with responsibility for Housing, Annette Ferguson.

The overjoyed recipient said that she was, “fed up with rent house, I went to church Sunday gone, and I said father if you could just help me with a house lot, I would do what I have to do… I do not want to live in rent house anymore. This morning I got up, went down on my knees and prayed the 23rd psalms and I did not expect to get it, but I am so glad about it.”

The mother of three noted that while she grew up in Georgetown, she is looking forward to making it her new home in Essequibo, where the lot has been granted. To secure her house lot, Smith would have to ensure payment is made as early as possible, something she has listed as a matter of priority.

Meanwhile, with reference to allocating house lots, Minister Ferguson assured that priority will be given to those who applied in the 1990s.

The initiative by the Coalition Government continues to place smiles on the faces of Guyanese. Smith is one of the thousands who have benefitted from government outreaches aimed at ensuring the good life is afforded to all Guyanese.
