Press Release – 100 contractors signed weeding and cleaning contracts for Regions 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6
– 75 per cent of contracts awarded were new entrants
Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Honourable Deodat Indar and the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Vladim Persaud today officially awarded approximately one hundred contracts for weeding and cleaning for Regions Two, Three, Four, Five and Six.
In addressing the contractors, Minister Indar applauded the Ministry for awarding 75 per cent of its weeding and cleaning contracts to new entrants. Minister Indar said, “We reached a total of over six hundred (600) bids and a total of one hundred (100) contractors were selected. Minister illustrated that each contractor is expected to employ on average a total of five persons that means, we will be providing employment for well over five hundred persons.”
According to Minister Indar, the Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali-led administration seeks to create employment and to put money into the hands of the small businesses. Minister further said, “We are in Government to ensure that the procurement process is opened to all and because of this, we have deliberately not allowed big contractors to bid in this process.”
Minister Indar further encouraged the awardees to do their job properly as taxpayers’ money is being used to provide a service and that service will be for the beautification of the communities within Regions Two, Three and Four.
Permanent Secretary Mr. Persaud said, “The Ministry expects that the works will be done in keeping with the standards, therefore, the contracting service must perform excellently to be recommended for future projects.” Mr. Persaud further added that the contractors must take pride in the delivery of the services as they work for the Government of Guyana and by extension for the People of Guyana.
Moreso, Hon. Bishop Juan A. Edghill encouraged the contractors to go out and get the work done. Minister Edghill said, “Don’t see yourselves as doing small jobs but see it as very important. Do the work not just for the money, but for the country.”
The Ministry of Public Works wishes to extend congratulations to all the contractors who were awarded contracts today.
