At the ‘Government Comes to you’ outreach today at the University of Guyana’s Tain Campus, Berbice, Minister of Public Telecommunications, Catherine Hughes met with Berbice farmers to introduce her ministry’s new initiative, which is a mobile application for farmers.
The minister and her team guaranteed the farmers that the app would provide new prospects in their service to customers. Some of the benefits from this app include International Trade, employment and transportation opportunities which will allow Farmers to have a better understanding of the stock market value.
In her address to the farmers, Minister Hughes cited the lack of fertile agriculture soil in countries in the region. She told those gathered, these countries rely on international trade for basic crops such as cassava, adding that farmers are at an advantage since our 873 square miles allows them to cultivate diverse vegetation.
In an introductory session, the ministry’s technical team demonstrated some of the features of the app that allows the user to view the demand for produce on the local and international markets, and assist them in promoting their produce to broader markets and will be more tech savvy.
The idea sparked great interest among the farmers who were willing to explore new prospects to further boost their farms.
Minister Hughes also announced that specialised training, for at least four weeks, would be provided for the farmers to become acquainted with the mobile application to ensure it is fully utilised for their benefit.
