Region Seven upping the ante in works delivery
DPI, GUYANA, Monday, June 11, 2018
The Regional Democratic Council of Region Seven (Cuyuni- Mazaruni) is hoping to expend at least 70 percent of its budgetary allocation by the end of the next quarter.
Regional Chairman Gordon Bradford said last week that only 32 percent of its budget, for this year, has been expended, “due to a number of setbacks, including the current rainy season.” According to the chairman, some projects had to be put on hold especially road works. “I’m not that satisfied with that, but we have been forging ahead”, he told DPI.
He said the region “need to pick up the pace and get going.” However, at the same time, he cautioned that there will not be any “rushing through,” since the council is “very wary of substandard work.”
According to the chairman, the region’s focus is to provide renewable energy and boost agro processing. The region is also examining ways to improve its road networks, which will allow businesses to truck products in and out of far flung interior areas.
During the examinations of the 2018 Budget estimates, a total of $2.5B was allocated to the region. $2.2B will go towards current expenditures, and $255M will go towards the capital expenditures. The allocated sums will be spent on regional administration and finance, public infrastructure, education delivery and health services.
