Rose Hall municipality called upon to become involve with LGC by GAM
DPI, GUYANA, Thursday, April 19, 2018
The Rose Hall Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) was called upon to involve the Local Government Commission (LGC) in its employment process.
This was disclosed by President of the Guyana Association of Municipalities (GAM), Carwyn Holland, on Wednesday, during the M&TC’s statutory meeting.
Holland told the council that they need to receive approval from LGC, whilst staying within the confines of the law before proceeding with hiring anyone to serve the council and the residents.
This is in light of Mayor Vijay Kumar Ramoo’s hiring of the Rose Hall Town Clerk without the approval of the LGC, which led to several town councillors raising concerns about the decision. As a result, letters were sent to the Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan and LGC requesting their intervention in the matter.
An investigation has been launched according to Minister Bulkan, “The commission, after their investigation, would make a pronouncement on the employment. If they find it was not in accordance with law, they can overturn it. They have to power to do so under the law”, the minister explained.
The mayor, defending his decision, said that the councillors were informed about the hiring of the town clerk at the municipality’s last statutory meeting and approved the decision. Mayor Ramoo explained that the decision was taken due to the dire need for the position to be filled in the interest of the municipality.
