Safety of workers must be priority – Min. Broomes
─ work being executed and success in mining sector only possible due to labours of workers
─ “The safety of the workers is a great concern and should not be taken for granted. It should be at the top. Their safety must come first! We put safety first then the loam and everything else after”
DPI, Guyana, Monday, August 27, 2018
Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, today, said the safety and wellbeing of workers in the mining sector must be a priority.
The minister was at the time addressing a workshop for sand and loam quarry operators, facilitated by the Guyana Geology & Mines Commission (GGMC) at the Herdmanston Lodge.
“The safety of the workers is a great concern and should not be taken for granted. It should be at the top. Their safety must come first! We put safety first then the loam and everything else after,” Minister Broomes emphasised.
She noted that the work being executed and the success in the mining sector are only possible due to the labours of the workers. As such it is necessary that their safety comes first. She encouraged the stakeholders at the workshop to conduct their business in a “more safe manner and in a better environment.”
Minister Broomes noted that the greening of Guyana’s economy is a responsibility for everyone in the country, not just the government or the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission.
“Together, we can make a difference of making our country brighter and a better Guyana,” the minister said.
