“Seize all opportunities”-Min. Hughes

Residents of West Watooka, Linden have been urged to take hold of all opportunities presented to them by the Coalition Government. The charge was delivered by Minister of Public Telecommunication Catherine Hughes during a community meeting on April 30.

Minister Hughes said while the government is providing the skills through training and other activities, persons must seize the opportunity to create better lives from themselves.

She pointed out that her ministry has been conducting training programmes for women, and young boys and girls across the country. Minister Hughes related that a recent training exercise in the mining town last August afforded a 16-year-old girl the chance to start her own web design business, three weeks into a 12- week training.

“When we bring technology, you have an opportunity to learn online. Just imagine you have applications on your phone. You have YouTube, where you can go to Khans Academy where your child could go and see a demonstration for a math problem,” the minister noted.

The Minister said while “all these things are available; it will only make sense if they are taken advantage of.”

In the same vein she promised that in the not too distant future, an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub will be set up in the community.

“That is the vision this coalition has for you,” she said.

Since 2015, the ministry has established 174 ICT hubs, 14 of which are in the mining town.
