DPI, Guyana, Saturday, December 15, 2018
The festive season is here and several children from Buxton, Lusignan and the surrounding communities were the lucky recipients of an early Christmas treat as the Ministry of Social Protection kicked off its 2018 Christmas Drive.
The gift distribution exercise attracted 400 young children from within the Buxton community while 165 children received their presents at the Lusignan Learning Centre.
Minister of Social Protection Amna Ally accompanied by First Lady Sandra Granger along with the Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Basil Williams SC interacted with the children and their parents during the event.
Minister Ally acknowledged the sponsors of the Christmas Drive “As we know this annual event is possible thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Wilson, who contribute every Easter and Christmas Season. So, I thank them for their kindness and the government continues to be grateful for their initiative.”
First Lady Mrs. Granger said she hoped the toy distribution drive brought a smile to the faces of the children and on behalf of the President and herself, wished everyone a happy and peaceful season.
Buxton businessman Morris Wilson and his wife Jasmine, the owners of the Buxton/Friendship Gas station, sponsor the annual event every year within the community. Wilson explained that they have been giving back to the community for 10 years now and will continue to do so, as part of their Christian belief to reward those in need for their success.
His wife Jasmine explained, “It is something that we want to do, it has been 10 years since we started this event and God has blessed us tremendously. This is our only way to give back to the community…I believe that once you achieve something you need to give back to those in need,”
She also said this is not the only initiative the couple have undertaken; they also distribute kites to the children during the Easter Season.
Meanwhile, officials of the Lusignan Learning Centre thanked the First Lady and the Ministers for their involvement in this year’s gift distribution
