Sophia Training Centre preparing students for work environment via workshop

Young jobseekers and students sitting the CSEC examination at the Sophia Training Centre benefitted for a capacity building seminar.
The workshop facilitated by the Ministry of Social Protection, the Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency in collaboration with the Sophia Community Association (SOCDA) instructed participants on proper resume preparation, interview techniques, work ethics.
Programme Coordinator at SOCDA, Orin Nelson Labor Officer, Dexter Semple and the Chief Recruitment Officer, Yolanda Grant were present to assist in the workshop’s agenda.
Nelson expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Social Protection for their collaboration in providing the forum to assist them in enhancing the lives of the young people attending the CSEC night school. “The students are happy and every day they ask us to continue with the programme because it has been changing their lives,” remarked Nelson.
He guaranteed the students that they will leave the workshop “charged, equipped, knowledgeable and prepared for that dream job and move on in their future endeavours”. Nelson said he hopes to host a similar workshop for the students in April.
Meantime, Grant noted that in her task at the recruitment agency is to assist persons in seeking jobs, she has observed that persons with good resumes sometimes fail at interviews because they are not able to sell themselves or persons lack proper behavioural conduct in workplaces. “We saw this avenue to assist these persons and we were able to engage with SOCDA to partner with us where we can refer persons to enhance on their qualifications so that they could become employable.”
The Central Recruitment and Manpower Agency is a division of the Social Protection Ministry that registers applicants for employment, taking specific note of their occupational qualifications, experiences and desires; it evaluates, if necessary, their physical and vocational abilities. Its objective is to place individuals seeking jobs in suitable employment while providing career guidance and counselling. The agency was established by the Government of Guyana in October 1944.
