State-of-the-Art Digital Lab to improve Skeldon’s health services
DPI, Guyana, Thursday, April 4, 2019
As the Ministers of Public Health continue their visit to Region 6 to commission several new and upgraded health facilities, a state-of-the-art digital laboratory was opened this morning at the Skeldon District Hospital.
This is the first of such laboratory to be commissioned in the region.
The laboratory will generate, store and process data (records and results) which will, in turn, allow the hospital to serve the residents of East Berbice-Corentyne. It will also aid in the reduction of referrals to the New Amsterdam Hospital.
According to Director of Regional Health Services, Jevaughn Andrew Stephen, the goal is to streamline all the public hospitals in the region to be digitally equipped. A necessary step as the world continues to move forward technologically. Stephen has been accompanying the ministers on their visit to health facilities around the region.
Doctor in charge of the Skeldon District Hospital, Dr. Ryan Campbell explained that the medical facility delivers services to more than 43,000 persons hailing from Eversham, Corentyne to as far as Orealla, Corentyne River. He further noted that with this new digital lab, the hospital will improve the quality of services offered.
While addressing the gathering at the commissioning ceremony, Minister Lawrence noted that patients would no longer have to seek medical attention at a private institution or travel to the New Amsterdam Hospital to get access to the much-needed services. She also pointed to the fact that doctors, nurses and technicians attached to the hospital will now be able to work with confidence and without fear of their experiments being destroyed.
She noted the transformation to the Skeldon District Hospital over the past two years.
“We have an upgraded maternity ward and a recently installed a paediatrics ward and now a state-of-the-art digital lab.”
The Skeldon Hospital administration and the Regional Health Services were commended by the Public Health Minister for a job well done in maintaining the Ministry’s 2020 vision of providing reliable, effective and efficient health care delivery thought out the country.
