Tourism, culture, history to be showcased at Linden Town Week 2020

Hundreds of Guyanese are expected to flock to the Linden next year, as the town will be hosting seventeen days of mega activities for its town week celebrations.

The Linden Town Week’s 2020 festivities will receive extensive and robust planning, since the second largest town in Guyana, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary, under the theme, “Fifty 4 Fifty”- observing 50 activities for its 50 years.

During the launch at Pegasus Hotel on Friday, Mayor of Linden Waneka Arrindell said the annual event is one which all Lindeners highly anticipate. She said the activities display the culture and the people of Linden and will support the socio-economic environment of the township. “We hope that this event will showcase what Linden will become and its history, where Linden came from and where it is today,” the Mayor stated.

The activities are scheduled to kick off on April 25, 2020, and will continue until May 5 2020.  According to the purposed calendar of events, there will be a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, April 25, 2020. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet the delegates of the Miss Teen Pageant 2020. A series of jazz and poetry sessions are slated for September 26.  A debate and spelling bee competition are expected to be held on September 27 Among other activities proposed, residents, will benefit from health and medical outreaches, business expos and food festivals.

The Mayor said $50,000 will be awarded the person who wins in the municipality’s ongoing logo competition. Interested persons can create an appropriate logo which they believe can be used to brand the town week celebrations. This competition ends on October 12, 2019.

Councillor and Chairman of the Social Committee, Norvel Fredricks, who is also the creator of the Linden Town Week activity, said the concept of the celebrations is to exhibit the mining town and its achievements. “the event has grown considerably and it is an event that everyone looks forward too. We will continue to build on that concept of showcasing Linden with all the entertainment,” Fredricks noted

Also, Deputy Mayor Wainwright Bethune said the municipality will engage residents and hotel owners so that there are enough accommodations available for persons who will be visiting during the period. He also informed that residents of Linden are also included in the planning of next year’s festivities and encouraged them to submit ideas and proposed dates.
