Update on Rupununi Flooding Situation

The flood situation in Region 9 has worsened, according to information provided by Director General of the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig.

Based on information received, the water level increased by approximately 5ft between 5am to 11am yesterday in Tabatinga, Culvert City and Lethem.

A total of 25 persons are in temporary shelters at Culvert City Primary School, Tabatinga Community Centre Ground and the Amerindian Hostel in Lethem, while additional persons have opted to board with relatives.

As a result of the situation, the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) proposed the closure of St.Ignatius Primary and Secondary Schools, Arapaima primary, Arapaima Nursery and Culvert City Nursery Schools tomorrow. Craig related that Education Minister, Nicolette Henry has given her consent to suspend the above listed schools.

The CDC is in contact with the region and they have proposed a report for today. The CDC is currently on standby to give the region the necessary support.
