“We are committed to house to house registration” – Pres. Granger

“We’ve already gone to parliament to get money for GECOM [Guyana Elections Commission], we are committed to house to house registration. The old list is invalid, expired and is corrupted, so we are doing everything we have been advised by GECOM.”

Those sentiments were expressed by President David Granger, who was speaking on the sidelines of an accreditation ceremony hosted at the Ministry of the Presidency earlier today.

The president pointed out that GECOM is a semi-autonomous agency and preparation for and administration of elections are now vested in the Commission, in accordance with the Election Laws, Act No. 15 of 2000.

The president reiterated his commitment to “free and fair” elections, noting that “the National Assembly has not been prorogued, we have work to do, to make sure there are credible elections, I am committed to credible elections.”

As explained in his address to the nation on Wednesday, President Granger said when GECOM makes known its readiness for General and Regional elections, he will announce a date for elections.

The president also made it clear that he has no problem meeting with the opposition leader and will be extending an invitation for a meeting.
