The role of municipal councillors is to represent residents in their constituency and to consider the well-being and interests of the entire municipality. A councillor also helps to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of a city or town.

On Sunday, His Worship the Mayor of Georgetown, Pandit Ubraj Narine, accompanied by City Councillors (M&CC) fanned-out in the community of Alberttown, meeting residents. The exercise undertaken by the municipality is in keeping with its mandate to listen to concerns of city residents, to find timely solutions.

Following a walkabout exercise by the team, a meeting was subsequently held at the Saint Ambrose Primary School, where several community members and youths were gathered. Most of those present highlighted the unsanitary conditions of the drains in the community.

According to Michelle Mitchel, the drain which runs east-west at the front of her house needs urgent attention. She said the current condition of the drain harbours a lot of flies and mosquitoes.

Esan Hamilton, another worried resident, said “my concern is as the same as everyone else, the drainage. The gutter at the front and back of my home is clogged up with thick mud and the water is unhygienic.”

Those attending the meeting were assured that their drainage concerns will be a thing of the past. Mayor Narine stated that by this week the municipality will initiate works to address the issue. “We can also place the bins by the weekend and I will come myself and assist in the cleaning of the drain,” he pledged

Meanwhile, Mayor Narine ended his Sunday’s outreach with a massive backpack and school supplies distribution to students in the community of Charlestown.
