“The upcoming election is the greatest in this country’s history, it will determine the direction in which Guyana goes and whoever is in government at the end of this election, will have a responsibility upon their shoulders to ensure that the upcoming generation, understands and benefits from it.”

Councillor of Constituency 5, Akeem Peter.

These were the profound words of Akeem Peter, Councillor of Constituency 5 – Sophia, A & B Fields. Peter was the youngest Deputy Mayor ever to be elected to the serve on the Georgetown City Council.

In an exclusive interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Peter re-emphasised the importance of casting one’s ballot as this election will determine the future of our nation

He said young people must understand the with the upcoming oil production, it is just a resource garnered, and it is the proper supervision of monies earned that will determine its benefit to Guyana’s youth.

“It is not only about oil, but it also comes back to the management of finances from that resource and how it benefits young people… for example, which industries we decide to invest in, which collaborations we decide to sign on to, which initiatives we decide to generate.”

Peter further alluded to the fact that the party the nation elects should be trustworthy – “has the best track records, has fewer scandals, has shown its heart is in the right place.” Moreover, political leadership, integrity and ideology, will determine who’s best to lead.

“Your vote is an investment. In business, they often tell you because of what you invest in, because you may or may not get returns, so the question is when you invest that vote, who or what returns will you get?”

Peter concluded that Guyana is brokering for the future and he intends to invest his time and vote in the right place and believes all young people should follow suit.
