$12M bridge brings relief to Plaisance, Sparendaam residents

A brand new $12 Million bridge has brought relief to the communities of Plaisance and Sparendaam, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
This afternoon, there were shouts of jubilation, when Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon Basil Williams, SC and Director General (DG) of the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon commissioned the bridge.
The absence of the much-needed facility, which now safely connects the two villages, was a cause of distress to residents for several years.
Dubbed their “Christmas gift” by Regional Chairperson Genevieve Allen, residents were assured that much more will be realised in the communities after March 2, 2020, General and Regional Elections.
DG Harmon said after the issue of the bridge was brought to his attention during an outreach to the community, he reached out to the private sector for assistance. He described the construction of the new bridge as a success story and noted that the best is yet to come.
“We are sure that Guyana is on the right track under the leadership of (His Excellency) President David Granger and the APNU/AFC administration. And I know that come March 2nd, you will give us that opportunity to continue this development we have started and ensured that not only this bridge is fixed in Plaisance, but all of your streets and the matters that affect you on a daily basis.
AG Williams said the commissioning of the bridge represents a promise kept.
“What you seeing here this afternoon is delivery. The APNU/AFC delivers. And that is what happened today. This is not an isolated event; we have a policy to deliver throughout the length and breadth of Guyana,” he said to arousing applause.
The AG said the restoration of infrastructure is one the countless issues left by the previous administration that the Coalition continues to remedy.
“You go to Buxton, though there were no roads in 23 years, you are seeing roads. You go to BV, the same thing in Mahaica. We want to say to you that we are assured that you will remain with us.”
He pledged the installation of street lights and rehabilitation of the roads.
Delivering remarks at the simple ceremony too were Regional Chair Genevieve Allen and community activist Conway Douglas.
