Computer literacy is an essential skill in nearly every workplace. To this end, 184 Charity residents are now versed in this field.

The group is the first batch of graduates who took up the offer of free computer classes offered by the ZARA Group of Companies in collaboration with the Guyana Police Force’s ‘G’ Division across the Pomeroon-Supenaam Region.

Kareena Dindyal, a young beneficiary, said the course was a rewarding one. “The classes were good for me. I learnt a lot and see this as a start towards improving myself.”

According to Police Divisional Commander, Khali Pareshram, the programme is geared towards increasing technological literacy among Region 2 residents to improve communication especially in far-flung districts and establish the foundation for them to elevate themselves academically.

“We recognised at the level of the police force that there is a need for better communication between ourselves and the citizens and it makes no sense we improve our skills and not those of the citizens. Therefore, we have dedicated ourselves to training the residents so that they also can become computer literate. Not only will it enhance communication, but it will also provide the opportunity for them to go further. We are laying the foundation for them to soar high and become recognised.”

The six-months certificate programme commenced in October 2018 and wrapped up on March 9 of this year. The classes were conducted by Police Officers Sergeant, Telston Hanover and Rural Constable, Yelena Jairam.

Commander Pareshram indicated that all expenses for the classes, which also includes free transportation to and from classes, are covered by the Police Force and the ZARA Group of Companies

The ZARA Group of Companies was established about 30 years ago by a Guyanese family residing in the USA. The group provides technical support to the Guyana Police Force in the form of cybersecurity.

The second round of classes has begun with 74 residents from Supenaam and Onderneeming Sand Pit.
