The 300 students attending Sand Creek Secondary School in the South Central Rupununi, Region 9, will soon be housed in a safer environment conducive for learning. This follows the government’s approval of $24M to remedy infrastructural defects to the school.

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon, during today’s post-Cabinet press briefing, explained that works will be executed by Gormain D’Aguiar Construction.

The Sand Creek Secondary School officially opened its doors on September 3, 2012, to accommodates 88 students from Shulinab, Sawariwau, Katoonarib, Shiriri, Rupunau, Sand Creek and other nearby villages. It was built at a cost of $78M under the previous administration.

In 2017, Minister of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, Sydney Allicock visited the school and discovered an unsafe structure with deep cracks in the walls including the evidence of the haphazard attempts to fix them. The environment was also deemed unhygienic for students. The minister then committed that the government will conduct emergency works on the building.

It is anticipated that these upgrades will be completed before the new school term in September.
