Aishalton is a titled Amerindian community located in Deep South Rupununi.

During a public meeting with the Toshao and residents of the Indigenous community, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton has undertaken to replace the village’s generator.

Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton addressing the residents of Aishalton during the community meeting.

This commitment was made after it was highlighted that the generator, which powers the secondary school, the police station and the district hospital, has stopped working following multiple mechanical failures.

Minister Norton assured the residents of the purchase of a new generator and urged them to maintain it well, once received.

A generator belonging to the region usually provides three hours of power nightly in the interim.

This has been the case since 2008 and the Government of Guyana, through the Minister of Social Cohesion, is actively looking for a long-term solution to the problem to prevent similar occurrences.

In this regard, the minister will be supplying the community with a fully functional generator in a matter of weeks. He further encouraged the Aishalton residents to continue caring all the previously donated items.

The minister also donated several gardening and farming tools, sport and recreational items as well as kitchen utensils.

The public meeting held in the region was a part of a massive ministerial outreach to several areas in Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo. The 19-member delegation visited a total of 28 villages in three days bringing much-needed support; listened to the concerns of the residents and crafted solutions to the issues raised.
