Youth within the Yupukari community, Region 9 benefitted from the distribution of sport equipment and bicycles.
The gear, donated during the historic Ministerial outreach to Region 9, is for various sport disciplines including volleyball, football, cricket and circle tennis.
Minister of Public Affairs, Dawn Hastings-Williams said that this initiative is one that the Coalition Government supports as it is their hope to make the nation’s future leaders well-rounded individuals.
“We believe, it is important that our young people engage in sporting activity since idle hands do the devil’s work and we do not want that we want them to be gainfully occupied… We want to ensure that our young people are active and so this is necessary,” the minister said.
She also promised the residents donation of uniforms for the students and rehabilitation of a sport ground equipped with flood lights. This, she said, will ensure potential athletes have the opportunity to train at night.
The Public Affairs Minister stressed that she will relay these requests to the Department of Social Cohesion with a view to finding a way forward for the development of sport in the community.
Over the past three years, the government has invested heavily in sport in the hinterland regions to find and nurture the hidden talents that in those far-flung areas.
