As the Coalition Government’s public outreach got in full swing, on Wednesday, Minister of Social Cohesion Dr. George Norton called on citizens to familiarise themselves with the programmes and training opportunities offered through his department.
“Many of the services the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport offers to the public, young people are unaware of these despite us advertising in the newspaper or speaking about it at every opportunity we have… So, this is an opportune time to inform the youths on what we have in store for them,” the minister told the Department of Public Information during the public outreach held at the Square of the Revolution.
Minister Norton stressed that it is important to inform the nation’s future leaders about these opportunities, particularly in the area of employment.
For Elijah Allicock, a resident of the Sand Hills community in Region Three, the exercise was a boon that would assist in his plans to reintroduce sports into his community and the Sand Hill school system.
“… we are looking to rebuild the Sand Hills community and we are seeking assistance from the Department of Sport,” he said. Allicock stressed that there is need to resuscitate sporting activities since this will help in moulding well-rounded individuals who can positively contribute to the community.
Allicock explained that cricket and boxing are the two-sport disciplines he wishes to implement since there is are several young men within the community who are more than capable of bringing sporting glory to Guyana, once given the opportunity.
“So, I shared my issues with the representatives of the ministry, and they stated that they understand the situation and will visit the community as soon as possible to resolve the issues we are experiencing,” he added.
Many of the persons who flocked the department’s booth were interested in the various training opportunities and services offered. Among them were teachers who requested for application forms, books and other educational material to share with others who could not attend the outreach.
