Construction underway for new GWI, CH&PA offices in Lethem
Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, MP, says he is pleased with the progress made so far on the ongoing construction of new regional offices of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) and Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA), currently underway in Lethem, Region Nine.
Minister Croal visited the project site at the weekend.
“I’m very happy about the progress I’ve seen so far, I’m also happy that we’ll also have them under one building to be able to serve the services we provide under the Ministry of Housing and Water,” the minister said.
He said the services that will be provided will benefit a large number of villages within the area.
“You have over fifty-seven villages that the service will be provided for, for water.”
When completed, the CH&PA and GWI offices will offer their individual services to the township and neigbouring villages. The CH&PA currently shares space at the Regional Democratic Council, while a private building is being rented for GWI.
“Currently our housing department is at the RDC. So, we’ll have them now be placed under one building, this building is said to be completed before the year is finished,” Minister Croal said.
With the Government’s efforts to strengthen the housing sector in the region, Minister Croal said a new housing officer will be appointed before the end of this month.
Three staff from the housing department will also be housed at the new facility.
The construction of the new office forms part of Government’s efforts to strengthen regional services across the country.
Minister Croal turned the sod for the new GWI and CH&PA regional office at Lethem last June.
Under the 2021 budgetary allocation to the GWI., the sum of $23 million was budgeted for the construction of the new office.
