Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan reiterates his stance that Community Policing Groups (CPG) will help to build the character of youths as a way to reduce crimes nationally.

This was disclosed, on Thursday, at the Ministry of Public Security’s boardroom during the CPG Spelling Bee Award presentation.

“Our safety and security are going to come from the young people that we can build today so that we can have better citizens tomorrow. This is not only attached to bee spelling but sports and music to help make this land a great nation.”

Minister Ramjattan noted that the activities conducted by his ministry for the CPG 43rd anniversary, which is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Partners in the promotion of a safe and secure nation’, spotlights youth participation, peace promotion and social cohesion.

The minister stressed that the lessons of safety and security for youths start at the home and school.

Forty (40) young persons from ‘A’ to ‘D’ Division participated in the spelling bee competition. This, however, quickly dwindled to five juniors and five seniors at the final stage of the game.

Due to the fierce competition lasting four rounds among the juniors, the decision was taken to award all five while only three seniors survived. CPG Administrator Dennis Pompey noted that this year’s competition attracted more youth participation compared to 2018. The ministry hopes to build on this by including ‘E’ and ‘F’ Divisions in 2020.

In addition to this, the CPG Administrator said that the ministry hopes to provide lessons, as similarly conducted in Berbice, to the youths attached to the various CPGs.

Pompey explained that such activities could only be undertaken, once resources are provided.

Serena Sampson, Gaitree Singh, Dillian Pawaroo, Sehana Bacchus and Usha Indarsingh were the lucky recipients of the junior category to receive a trophy and prizes, respectively.

While Gajendra Persaud, Ishara Sampson and Shandell Pellew were the winners of the Senior category. This includes Devishkar Sukhan and Cassis Nunes as the runner-ups for the Senior category.
