Crime crackdown continues

As the Guyana Police Force (GPF) continues its effort to crack down on crime, it conducted two operations today.

An intelligence-led operation, commanded by a Senior Police Officer resulted in the interception of a white Toyota Fielder Wagon at Samatta Point, Grove, East Bank Demerara at 09:30hrs this morning. An inspection of the vehicle revealed, hidden under the back seat, a red and black haversack containing two handguns, fake licence plates and other paraphernalia

A statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the police recovered an unlicensed .45 Colt Pistol with four live rounds, an unlicensed 9MM Ruger Pistol with nine live rounds a pair of fake ‘paste-on’ licence plates, a black jersey, knife, camouflage cap, door lock and a screwdriver.

The five young men who were in the vehicle, ages 27, 28, 29, 30 and 33, all reside on the East Bank of Demerara, were held and are being processed for the courts.

Meanwhile, a joint search of the Georgetown Prison was conducted today by ranks of the Police Force and of the Prison Service. The five-hour operation was commanded by two Senior Officers and involved a total of seventy-one ranks. Several prohibited items were unearthed including 19 cellular phones, 5 cell phone chargers, 1 flash drive, 15 cigarette lighters, 2 (packet) cigarette, 5 pairs of scissors, 7 improvised weapons and 500 grams of cannabis.

Earlier in the week Commissioner of Police, Leslie James and Deputy Commissioner, Paul Williams met and held discussions with members of the National Community Policing Executive (NCPE) during its Monthly Statutory meeting.

Representatives of the Statutory Meeting included the Chairpersons/Representatives of the sixteen Community Policing Groups (CPG) Divisions as well as the Deputy Police Commanders of Divisions A-G, who are also the Divisions’ CPG Coordinators. It was chaired by the Public Relations and Press Officer of the Force, who is also the National Coordinator of Community Policing in Guyana.

Both Commissioner James and Deputy Commissioner Williams assured the national body of several initiatives that will be implemented immediately to address their concerns.

Vice-Chairman of the NCPE, Kishore Gobin noted that with the application of the new measures outlined by the Commissioner communities will be safer. On behalf of all the CPG members, Gobin congratulated the recently sworn in Commissioner and his new administration on their appointment.
