Ensuring Quality Education for All

─ Delegates from CARICOM-Cuba Meeting tour special needs facility

DPI, Guyana, Friday, June 14, 2019

Delegates from the sixth meeting of CARICOM Foreign Ministers and Cuba today partook in a tour of the Regional Diagnostic Centre for Children, Youths and Adolescents with Special Education Needs.

Cuban Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Bruno Rodriguez Parilla, at the end of the tour gave brief remarks on what this Centre means to him

“I am deeply moved, there is a special bond between Guyana and Cuba and it is a very special experience to see specialists from both countries working together for the sake of children, adolescents and youths with special needs. I hope that we can continue working to better explore new areas of interest and enhancing bilateral relationships.”

The Centre was conceptualized at the 2014 Cuba CARICOM Summit with the vision of training persons to be prepared to manage persons with disabilities at any place in Guyana and the Caribbean region. With properly trained educators, children youth and adolescents with disabilities and special education needs can enjoy a better quality of education and overall life.

The Centre was built collaboratively between the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education of Guyana. While Guyana was identified as the location for the facility, it is expected to serve the entire Caribbean region.

The current programme which sees Cuba providing Technical support with their specialists will come to an end in December, at which point those Guyanese specialists currently being trained will fill the roles of their Cuban counterparts.
