First Lady joins the National Library for ‘Library Link’ 5th Anniversary

Georgetown, Guyana – (June 1, 2017) First Lady, Mrs. Sandra Granger, yesterday, joined members of the National Library, for the fifth anniversary of their ‘Library Link’ activity.  The programme targets five old folks homes, the Millicent Greaves Memorial Senior Citizens’ Residence, Uncle Eddie’s Home, Archer’s Home, Byer’s Senior Citizens Home and the St. Thomas More Home.

Speaking to attendees in the Library’s Conference Room, Mrs. Granger, who offered brief words of encouragement to the attendees, said, “We are never too old to learn. We are never too old to experience new things. That is one of things that keep us engaged with life. So for me it’s a great pleasure to be among you today and to celebrate with you and with the library on this fifth occasion of ‘Library Link’.  I would really like to also commend the Library for conceptualising this service to our seniors and I hope it will continue to expand and grow and maybe spread throughout the country, where the library service is offered,” Mrs. Granger said.

Meanwhile, Chief Librarian at the National Library, Ms. Emily King said that the programme was birthed five years ago after it was realised that the elderly persons in the homes were not being gainfully occupied.

“We know that in many cases the seniors are just at the homes and they just spend their time sitting down, looking at television. It seems like when you get old, you are just forgotten and when you live in homes, you become somewhat isolated,” Ms. King said.

The programme is run on the last Wednesday of every month and features reading classes, health talks and arts and craft among other activities from 14:00hrs to approximately 14:30hrs. The National Library provides transportation for the seniors from their homes to the Library.
