GECOM deliberates draft timelines for elections

DPI, Guyana, Friday, September 6, 2019

As preparations begin for the holding of credible General and Regional Elections, the Guyana Elections Commission met today to examine and deliberate on the draft schedule of timelines discussed by Secretariat.

The meeting focused on the duration in relation to each activity. It was agreed that these discussions will continue at the next Statuary meeting on September 10.

It was noted that the Secretariat is continuing the encoding and verification process of the data garnered from the House to House exercise.

Last week, GECOM’s Chairman, (ret’d) Justice Claudette Singh said the data from the House-to-House Registration process is to be merged with existing National Register of Registrants Database to produce a credible Official List of Electors.

Director-General of the Ministry of the Presidency, Joseph Harmon today clarified that there will be a cross-matching of the list produced from the exercise and the current list that exists. Harmon said at no time will the House-to-House data be put into one bundle with the current existing National Register of Registrants (NRR).

He further explained that the extended claims and objection period will be for persons whose names are not on the list or who have credible information that the name of other persons should be removed, for example, deceased relatives.

The commission has also completed training of polling day staff for Region 4 (Georgetown, East Bank and East Coast) and Region 5. Training will be conducted in Regions 1, 2 and 10 on the 7-8 September 2019.
