Green State Development Strategy available to the public

Guyana’s Green State Development Strategy (GSDS) Vision 2040 was recently handed over to President David Granger. The GSDS strategy which is now public, was received from United Nations Environment Programme Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Leo Hileman.

The process of developing the strategy began in December 2016 with the development of a framework document and continued with the formation of seven multi-stakeholder expert groups, represented by over 130 experts from around 98 states, private and civil society organisations.
“Guyana now has the distinct advantage of being among the first countries in the region to develop an all-inclusive comprehensive development strategy to be implemented over the next 20 years,” the Director General stated.
It was further revealed that emerging out of the expert groups was an advisory committee which met every month to review and contribute to the content. There were also 11 advisory meetings. Collectively, there were more than 18 thousand hours of meetings and engagements involving multi-stakeholders and advisory committee.
According to the Director General, the comprehensive strategy was built upon several previous strategies. These included the National Development Strategy, the National Competitiveness Strategy, the Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Low Carbon Development Strategy, the Climate Resilience Strategy and Action Plan, the Cultural Strategy and the Social Cohesion Strategy.
The findings of the report are expected to provide an inclusive, prosperous and good quality of life for all Guyanese. President Granger is of the belief that the report will ensure that Guyana stays ahead of the game with regards to the fight against climate change.
“We would like to be able to into the future providing an economically sustained existence for our people but at the same time, protecting this precious asset, our environment,” he underscored.
