Guyana’s education system continues to stand out regionally. The country is expected to receive seven awards for excellent academic performance at this year’s Regional Awards Ceremony being held on Thursday, December 5, 2019.
In recognition of their outstanding achievements following the results of their performance in the May/June 2019 examinations the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) has invited four Guyanese students to receive the seven prizes in Grenada later this year.
Caribbean Secondary Education (CSEC) top student, Riana Toney, who hails from the Cinderella County of Essequibo copped two awards; Most Outstanding Overall Performer at the CSEC Examinations as well as the award for Most Outstanding Performance in Humanities.
Briana Gopie and Samuel Haynes, both of Queen’s College will be presented with awards for the Most Outstanding Student in Business and Most Outstanding Student in Sciences respectively.
Toney secured a whopping 19 Grade One passes paving the way for her school to receive the award for CSEC School of the Year 2019. Haynes and Gopie secured 18 and 16 passes, respectively.
At the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE), Michael Bhopaul from Queen’s College secured three awards; Most Outstanding Overall Student, Most Outstanding in Natural Sciences and Most Outstanding in Mathematics.
Bhopaul previously topped nationally for both the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) in 2012 and the CSEC Examinations in 2017. This year’s awards come on heels of his impressive 16 Grade One passes during the two years of CAPE.
He will also be the third Queen’s College student to receive the Dennis Irvine Award as the Regional Top Performer, an award which CXC describes as the symbol of academic excellence at the CAPE level. Bhopaul will also receive the RM Results-sponsored award.
While Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago dominated the awards, Jamaica, Belize and Anguilla were also spotlighted as awardees this year.
The Ministry of Education will be recognising these and other outstanding performers at the national level on October 31, 2019, at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).
