Health Ministry monitoring active COVID-19 cases in Region Nine
The Ministry of Health is monitoring the Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo (Region Nine), which has recorded a spike in positive COVID-19 cases.
This was disclosed by Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony during Wednesday’s COVID-19 update. He said several communities in the region have recorded a spike in cases over the last two weeks.
“Right now, in Region Nine, we have about 354 active cases. There are 52 cases in Lethem, 50 cases in St. Ignatius, 38 cases in Sand Creek and we have also about 25 cases in Culvert City,” he said.
The Health Minister noted that most of the cases recorded were around the Lethem- Sand creek area. None of the cases, he said, required hospitalisation.
“Most of these cases have been mild and those who have difficulty breathing and so those are the ones we will move to the isolation centre but we haven’t had any people coming to the isolation Center.”
Minister Anthony said steps are being taken to control the spread of the disease.
As the country continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, persons are reminded to adhere to the COVID-19 preventative measures including frequent handwashing, sanitising, wearing masks in public and practicing social distancing. Persons 18 years and older are encouraged to visit any of the Ministry’s COVID-19 vaccination sites to receive their vaccines and protect themselves against the deadly disease.
