Hitting the right notes – Police Force military band celebrates 160th anniversary

DPI, Guyana, Friday, September 7, 2018

Lindeners were treated to an afternoon of toe-tapping, hand-clapping music performed by young members of the Guyana Police Force Military Band. The concert was hosted by E’ Division in observance of 160 years of the Band’s existence.

The audience was also entertained by medleys of national and cultural songs and dramatic poetry staged by ranks of the Police Force and members of the Scout Association.

Commander of E’ Division, Superintendent Anthony Vanderhyden said that the Force took a decision to have the ranks showcase their talent so that the public would be able to see their uniformed officers in a different, more social, setting.

Superintendent of Music, Charmaine Stuart said that youths were integrally involved in the event. “What we are doing today is celebrating with the young people in all the divisions, having them being a part of the celebration because we want to have youth participation,” she noted.

Several pieces of equipment and paraphernalia that are utilised by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were also on display.

The Guyana Police Force Band was established in 1858, which saw most members coming from the regimental force and when they were vested into the Police Force, they decided to be sworn-in in 1959. They have been representing the force at various national and cultural events since that time.
