― Sculpture Winslow Craig’s exhibition opens to the public

DPI, Guyana, Friday, February 15, 2019

Acclaimed sculptor and artist, Winslow Craig, has a new exhibition at Castellani House called ‘A Journey and Exploration of Forms’.

The exhibition of more than 11 sculptures represents the journey of one of Guyana’s most beloved artists.

In brief remarks, Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton praised the artist’s work noting that it reflects patience, discipline and creative vision with a sprinkle of ingenuity

“There is no doubt that Winslow Craig embodies these qualities, qualities that have enabled him to captivate all of his audiences. Staying true to his roots this artist has also promoted Guyana in a very flattering way and for that, he deserves additional praise,” the minister said.

It was highlighted that in 1997, Craig was awarded the Commonwealth Fellowship for the Arts and Craft which allowed him to study in New Zealand at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), from July 1997 to June 1998.

According to the well-known artist who also lectures at the University of Guyana, this exhibition speaks for itself with a combination of wood and metal among other materials.

“I am not much of a speaker but a maker of things and what is presented to you this evening speaks for me more than I can ever tell you in words…Wood is my first love; I grew up in the forest, I was born in forest… ever so often a tree might fall or is cut down for whatever reason. I am just extending the life of the tree when I use the wood,” Craig said.

He noted that creating art comes naturally to him; however, perfecting one’s style of art can be a journey for an artist.

“This central piece here this was the cumulation of the entire process…everything I did, everything that I experimented with… the experience I had in New Zealand was eye-opening; it taught me to look at things differently. That experience allowed me to sort of expand my creative thinking and what is here today is my journey,” the artist explained.

The exhibition is part of the ministry’s 2019 Mashramani activities which will conclude on March 30. All interested are advised to visit the Castellani House to view the exhibit.
