DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, February 13, 2019
Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton, on Wednesday, was bestowed with the Universal Peace Federation Award and the title of Ambassador of Peace for his work in fostering social cohesion and national unity.
It was highlighted that President David Granger will similarly be bestowed with the title of Ambassador of Peace.
During the simple ceremony, Minister Norton acknowledged the Universal Peace Federation for recognising his efforts to unify Guyanese from all walks of life. This, he said, is in keeping with the government’s vision to foster a healthy, well-functioning society for sustainable development.
“I am indeed moved to have received this award… and will work to live up to the expectations and continue to be worthy of this award that has been bestowed upon me,” the minister said.
National Chairman of the Guyana Chapter of Universal Peace Federation, Roshan Khan said the organisation’s decision to honour the minister stems from his ceaseless efforts to help those in need and create a more harmonious society. This, Khan added, made the minister the ideal person to bestow such an award since he has gone above and beyond the call of duty.
“These awards are not given lightly. You have to have exhibit exemplary behaviour, possess a positive character that transcends politics and personal religion. You must respect all religions, all cultures, all peoples,” he explained.
According to Khan, ambassadors are identified based on their roles and contributions to society. Awardees are usually recognised for their commitment to promoting reconciliation, building peace, initiating mediation processes, and promoting harmony.
Established in 2005, the Universal Peace Federation is an international and inter-religious network of individuals and organisations among others dedicated to building a world of peace in which everyone can live in freedom, harmony, cooperation, and prosperity.
Inter-faith peacebuilding, security, marriage and family, service, sports and arts are vital to the federation’s doctrines.
