Sixty-seven-year-old Irene Samaroo has been praying for justice following her sons’ death on the eve of 2019, and with the recent killing of the man who was wanted for their murder – she is satisfied.
Irene is the mother of Premcharran and Harricharran Samaroo who were brutally gunned down by armed bandits on Old Year’s Night 2018.
In January 2019, the police had issued a wanted bulletin for Kelvin Shivgobin for the murder of the two brothers following an alleged confession by an accomplice.
According to reports on December 31, 2018, the Samaroo brothers, who both worked as labourers, had earlier left their respective families to spend the night along with their two other siblings at their mother’s home when they were brutally gunned down during the course of a robbery.
During the celebrations of the night, the family heard loud sounds, similar to that of firecrackers, coming from the backyard, so Premchand called ‘Tully’, a father of two, accompanied by his older sibling – Haricharran, went to investigate. It was reported that ‘Tully’ came face to face with the bandits and was shot at point-blank range. He died instantly, while Harricharran, who was in tow, was struck by pellets from the blast and also brutally beaten. He later succumbed at the Port Mourant Hospital.
“Every day me ah study meh son them and at least God great… I does pray to God for satisfaction because my son them never trouble them or do anybody nothing and look how them tek them life like that. Nothing can’t bring back me son dem, but I feel like a part of me now return how them get killed”, Irene said.
The memory from that fateful night is still fresh in her mind as a day does not go by without her missing her sons. She noted that it becomes more complicated when she has to face her widowed daughters-in-law and grandchildren.
“My sons were hardworking people who wanted to break the new year with them cousin and mother, but them [bandits] come and kill them and leff them pickney without father and husband. But God is good them [bandits] get what them deserve. How them take people life; people ah take back them life.”
On Sunday afternoon, ranks of Number 2 Sub-Division, East Berbice-Corentyne, acting on intelligence, went into the backlands of Johanna, Black Bush Polder in search of “strange men seen in the backlands”. The lawmen were fired upon by the trio and in a bid to protect themselves exchanged gunfire killing the three criminals during the ordeal.
Reliable information shared with the DPI indicates that Shivchand Sewlall called ‘One Eye Papi’, who was also killed on Sunday, was allegedly involved in the murder/robbery of the Samaroo brothers.
