The government is also working assiduously to liberalise the telecommunications sector before the end of 2018.

In a mid-year report, the government said implementation of the Smart Guyana Programme will begin in phases. Financing for the first phase, the National Broadband Project is anticipated to be approved and be available by year-end.

This first phase seeks to enable access to high-quality ICT, training and e-services. Preparatory works on the data centre, compiling specifications and mobilisation of the contractor- Huawei- have begun.

Establishment of additional ICT hubs, provision of electronic access to public services, training, promotion of local content and revision of existing policies to improve access to ICT in the Hinterland will begin following the finalisation of project implementation arrangements.
