The Coalition Government came on for high commendation for its many contributions to the lives of 33,000 residents in the ancient town of New Amsterdam.

Minister of Social Protection, Hon. Amna Ally spearheaded a meeting at the New Amsterdam Town Hall on Friday. At the meeting, residents were allowed to voice their concerns about the issues affecting them. However, contrary to the meeting’s intention; most of the attendees expressed their satisfaction with the current administration.

Herbert Mohon, travelled to the meeting to testify of the services he received after undergoing successful eye surgery at the Ophthalmology Hospital in Port Mourant, Corentyne. Rubbishing a comment that claimed the medical facility is not in operation, Mohon stressed “I don’t know where they got that from, but I can speak for myself. I would have recently benefited from the facility and the service was amazing.”

Region 6’s Regional Executive Officer (REO), Kim Williams-Stephen, who was also present at the meeting, informed that the facility is currently providing effective services to residents in and out of the ancient county.

Another resident, Martin Christopher, highlighted that he was living in the Angoy’s Avenue community for decades, and since 2015, he now uses a street to access his home. “I can’t call it a dam anymore; I have to say a street. I have benefitted so much, and I don’t really have any complaints. The streetlights came as a gift to my family and me, we can now see far at nights, and I am happy,” Christopher said.

Melisa Darlington, 20, completed her secondary school education in 2017 and since then, she has been in search for a job. Darlington is now among several individuals who are currently being trained by the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) as a Patient Care Assistant in East Berbice-Corentyne.

Meanwhile, during her address to the gathering, Minister Ally assured that the government will continue to make life easier for all Guyanese. She chronicled some of the Coalition’s achievements since assuming off in 2015; while noting that with the imminent oil and gas industry, every citizen will benefit from the country’s wealth.

The town hall meeting also saw Member of Parliament (MP), Hon. Barbara Pilgrim, and Her Worship the Mayor of New Amsterdam, Winifred Haywood.
