Over $700M in contracts awarded t0 upgrade roads in Regions 3, 4, 10

GUYANA, GINA, Thursday, May 18, 2017

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon announced that government has awarded 24 contracts for a total value of $749,583,000 for the rehabilitation and construction of roads in Regions Three, Four and Ten.

The Minister who was addressing the media today, at a post -Cabinet briefing said, “this initiative is part of government’s ongoing programme and commitment to construct and rehabilitate urban and miscellaneous roads in all communities across Guyana, to improve the quality of life for all citizens.”

The Minister explained that during recent outreaches in Mon Repos on the East Coast Demerara (ECD), the residents complained about the condition of the roads in their communities.

A delegation also visited the Minister to complain about the poor state of roads, therefore.Works will soon commence in those areas among others in Region Four.

Some of the areas in Region Four to benefit from  works include Melanie Damishana,  Oil Mill road, Cove & John,  Hope main Access road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), Lot Number four Gas Station Street, Eccles- EBD,  Lots Six and Seven  Kaneville, EBD and Sideline Dam Good Success, EBD among others. Block 8 Housing Scheme which was developed by the previous administration will also benefit from works after being neglected for years, Minister Harmon said.

Over in Region Three works will be carried out at Lot Four- Greenwich Park Main Road, Lot Five-Old Road DeKinderen, Lot Seven Fisher Dam Zeelugt and the Boerasirie Housing Scheme Road, the Minister of State pointed out.

Meanwhile, in Region Ten there will be the rehabilitation of the teachers’ hostel road in Mackenzie and the One Mile to Canvas City road in Wismar.

The sum of $34.6B has been allocated to the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, in the 2017 National Budget. Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson said, “focus will be placed on a more concerted effort to ensure that roads, bridges, energy, power generation and other infrastructural works are undertaken and expanded, thus leading to a more integrated infrastructure for the creation of linkages with all Regions and all Guyana.”
