Press Release: FLOOD UPDATE AND ONGOING RESPONSE MEASURES
The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) wishes to update the public on the current flooding situation affecting several regions across Guyana following sustained rainfall from Thursday, March 26, to Monday, 31, 2026.
The CDC has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and is closely monitoring the situation. Field teams are deployed to monitor water levels, assess community impacts, and support local authorities. The EOC remains on alert to coordinate an escalated response if conditions continue to persist

An aerial reconnaissance was conducted on Sunday, March 29, 2026, by the CDC in collaboration with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) to assess conditions across regions 3, 4, and 5, including critical drainage and conservancy systems. It was observed that localised flooding continues to affect sections of coastal communities along the East Coast and some housing developments on the West Coast, and Ogle.
- Floodwaters in Georgetown have mostly receded, with only minor residual pooling in a few areas.
- Agricultural lands in Mahaica, Mahaicony, and Canal Polder have experienced significant water accumulation, impacting crops.
- Drainage systems remain largely functional, with pumps operational and maintenance ongoing.
- No overtopping has been reported at conservancy dams, and all systems remain structurally sound.
The Government of Guyana, with support from the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), has started distributing relief supplies to residents affected by recent flooding in regions 3 (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 4 (Demerara-Mahaica), and 5 (Mahaica-Berbice).
The Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Hon. Minister Manickchand, on Sunday, March 29, 2026, distributed cleaning supplies to residents in East La Penitence and Albouystown (Region 4), while the Civil Defence Commission distributed cleaning supplies to the Regional Democratic Councils of Regions 3 and 5.
On Monday, March 30th, 2026, the Minister of Labour and Manpower Planning, Hon. Keoma Griffith, distributed cleaning supplies to residents in East and West Ruimveldt.
Relief supplies currently being distributed include cleaning hampers and essential sanitation items, aimed at supporting households in maintaining safe and hygienic conditions as floodwaters recede.
The CDC will continue to work closely with Regional Democratic Councils (RDCs), Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), and other local stakeholders to identify the most affected and vulnerable areas in the coming days to ensure that assistance is delivered efficiently.
The CDC urges residents to remain vigilant and to take necessary precautions to protect life and property. Members of the public are also encouraged to report flooding or related impacts to the National Emergency Monitoring System (NEMS).
