Protest will not stop investigation into GECOM- Attorney General

–Those charged will face the law

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Hon. Mohabir Anil Nandlall, has clearly stated that protests will not stop the investigation into alleged fraud committed during the March 2 General and Regional Elections.

Referring to the violent protest at Belladrum on the West Coast of Berbice, the Attorney-General noted that this action was organised by the People’s National Congress (PNC).

“If they believe that this sort of behaviour will stop the investigations into GECOM; they are mistaken. I know, and a lot of people also know, that they are afraid of those investigations because of what the investigations will reveal and how many people will be implicated,” the Attorney General stated.

The protest broke out in response to the detention of Region Four Returning Officer Clairmont Mingo.

The Attorney-General further emphasised, “I am assuring the Guyanese people here and now that the vulgarity and fraud which were attempted at GECOM and by GECOM in relation to the March 2 elections will be fully investigated and persons implicated will be charged and will face the full force of the law and there is no force in Guyana that will stop that from happening.”

The protest at Belladrum saw the destruction of public property, blocking of the public road and bridges which inconvenienced thousands. The Guyana Police Force has since deemed the actions unlawful and has called for those protesting to desist from doing so.
