Region Ten hosts ‘Farmtastic’ competition for children
– aims to introduce children to agriculture
Fifteen Region Ten children, from ages four to six, are participating in a Farmtastic Kitchen Garden Competition aimed at inspiring the younger generation to grow their food.
The Region Ten Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and the Breaking Barriers Youth Group is spearheading the seven-week competition, which started on November 3.
Speaking with DPI, Regional Chairman Mr. Deron Adams said this approach introduces children to agriculture and teaches them a life skill.

“We wanted to have children at a tender age understand the importance of agriculture by way of educating them as to where their food comes from and the stages our food need to go through before becoming fully grown, especially during this COVID-19 pandemic.”
It also teaches them about the importance of executing their responsibilities.
The RDC provided the participants with the necessary items including seedboxes, gardening tools and seedlings. Each participant was also required to provide photographic updates of their daily activities in the garden.
“Of course, the parents of these participants were also there to guide them through the process to ensure all goes well, and these included check-ups from the Region’s agriculture officers. These check-ups allow them to grade the crops to eventually select a winner,” he said.
The competition will conclude this week.
This competition is part of the RDC’s observance of Agriculture Month 2020 hosted under the theme, “Training our children today so that they can feed our country tomorrow.”
