Schools re-open

Schools across the country opened today after the August holidays and students and teachers alike head back to classrooms to begin a new school year.

Parents could be seen dropping off their children. Reassuring hugs and words of encouragement were given to the little ones who are starting out to school for the first time. Older students were also reuniting with their classmates as they prepare to enter a new academic year.

There was mixed reaction to the first day back to school across the regions.

Despite the inclement weather, early reports from, Region Six indicate full turn out of teachers and students at Kildonden Primary School and other schools along the Corentyne Coast.

In Region Three teachers have shown up and there was full turn out at Patentia, West Demerara and Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary Schools, as well as several Nursery schools.

However initial reports for Linden, region 10 suggest that a few of the schools are closed and teacher are assembling in front of the Ministry of Education’s Region 10 Department for industrial action.

Senior officers within the Ministry of Education are currently visiting schools across Guyana in an effort to ascertain the impact, if any, of the planned strike action by the Guyana Teachers’ Union.

The school visits will begin between 08:30hrs and 09:00hrs. Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry is in Region Six, Chief Education Officer (CEO) Marcel Hutson is in Region 10 and Assistant Chief Education Officer (ACEO) (Primary) Owen Pollard is in Region Five. Officials visiting schools in Georgetown and Region Four include (ACEO) (Technical) Patrick Chinedu, ACEO (Secondary) June-ann Gonsalves, ACEO (Secondary) Samantha Williams, Superintendent Examinations, Saudia Kadir, Director, NCERD Jennifer Cumberbatch, Permanent Secretary, Adele Clarke Permanent Secretary and Technical Facilitator Francesca Vieira.
