DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, February 13, 2019

The Ministry of Social Protection, Counter-Trafficking Unit on Wednesday held a training exercise to better equip shelter operators on how to assist Trafficking In Persons (TIP) victims.

Coordinator of the unit, Tanisha Williams-Corbin says the exercise is designed to sensitise shelter operators with the national referral and identification process for TIP. “It’s very important for you as facility/shelter operators, managers and counsellors to receive the necessary knowledge to work with victims of TIP, not only counsel them but provide support and care.”

Corbin highlighted that the Countering-Trafficking Unit recorded and assisted 156 TIP victims in Guyana with 93 referred to the facilities for support in 2018.

“For 2019, so far, to date we have recorded 8 suspected cases of TIP victims with 46 victims identified. The Ministry of Social Protection and the Countering-Trafficking Unit objective is to ensure TIP victims be empowered to testify against perpetrators,” Williams- Corbin added.

The coordinator highlighted that the unit is collaborating with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) to repatriate victims who are found trafficked in the Caribbean. Additionally, TIP cases are garnering the attention of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
