Tourism in Guyana has been on the rise with the country recently declared the best in the world for Ecotourism with the number one destination video. President of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG), Mitra Ramkumar credits this to the cooperation and development the sector enjoyed during the former minister, Dominic Gaskin’s tenure.
“I must credit this, to the former minister, Mr. Dominic Gaskin who has listened to the private sector and has created the enabling environment,” Ramkumar expressed.
These remarks were made during a welcome ceremony held for the Minister of Business with Responsibility for Tourism, Haimraj Rajkumar.
Further, to cater to the growing tourism sector and the need for a more trained and competent workforce, THAG’s President elaborated on a project, which will see the establishment of a Hospitality Institute.
“It’s going to be done through the Ministry of Education and funded by the Caribbean Development Bank, the government has allocated two and a half acres of land, they have signed the contract for the design phase and it is going to mimic the operation of a four star hotel… So you’re going to have separate areas for training, for dining, for the kitchen, for the management and the support staff, so this facility will be a self-sustained one,” he informed.
Minister Rajkumar is confident that an even more robust tourism sector can be developed in Guyana.
The tourism industry is on the rise, with the recent statistics showing an increase in the number of persons processed at the various ports of entry.
