Underprivileged children benefit from donated school supplies

Some 25 students in the Demerara Mahaica and Mahaica/Berbice Regions are better equipped to attend school on Monday, September 3.
The Department of Education Schools Welfare Section, Mahaica-Berbice on August 28-29 distributed school items to children across the Region.
The students benefitted from shirts, pants, uniforms, bags, lunch-packs, socks, boots, shoes, pencil cases, vest, underwear and calculators, among others.
Among those who received the items were children with mentally challenged parents, children whose homes were destroyed by fire, children living in extreme poverty and orphans.
The recipients were identified by Headteachers across the region.
According to the Senior School Welfare Officer, Gloria Davidson-James, the initiative is a budgeted one which caters for needy cases.
James said while the Welfare Section focuses heavily on maintaining discipline among children and monitoring their attendance and punctuality at school, it also looks at other areas that would assist in making life easier for every school-aged child.
Regional Education Officer (REO) (ag), Sherry Grant-White applauded the initiative and thanked the Government of Guyana for providing finance so that children and their families who are faced with difficult circumstances, are able to attend school.
Meanwhile, in Region Four, Demerara/ Mahaica, the Department of Education said over 60 students received back-to-school supplies earlier today. The event which was held at the BV Quamina Primary School saw students from the nursery, primary and secondary levels attending. The students were all drawn from various communities within Region Four, East Coast and East Bank Demerara and were given with a wide range of school supplies in an effort to ensure that they can be ready for the academic year opening on Monday, September 3.
The items were sponsored by the Regional Chairman’s office, Department of Education and a number of private individuals and companies.
Among the items that the students received were school bags, books, stationaries, undergarments, school uniforms, shoes and socks. Several parents and students expressed their gratitude and thanks for the support being given by the Department of Education noting that it is timely considering the many harsh economic challenges that parents are confronted with these days, one parent was moved to tears with her three children reviving what she said’ “everything they needed for school.”
