Victory Valley gets back-to-school boost

DPI, Guyana, Wednesday, August 29, 2018

More than 75 young children from Victory Valley in Region 10 will start the new school term with supplies and bright smiles.

Today, Minister within the Ministry of Natural Resources, Simona Broomes, on behalf of her ministry donated school supplies to the depressed community. The donation was in honour of requests by Community Development Councillor (CDC) Chairman Anthony Roberts.

Minister Broomes commended Roberts for his dedication to developing his community. “He demonstrates true leadership,” she said.

The donation comes just a week before the opening of school and while uncertainty looms over pending industrial action by the Guyana Teacher’s Union, the minister encouraged parents to send their children to school.

Minister Broomes stressed the importance of a good education towards transforming depressed communities. She also had encouraging words for the children, “Children I just want to encourage you to go to school and do your best.”

Raysheba Carroll, 17, is preparing for high learning at the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE). She said the contribution is a meaningful gesture to herself and the community at large.

“It’s good to see that they giving back to the community, a community like this where parents won’t be able to afford to send some of their children to school. We really appreciate it and it helps so that Monday morning a lot of us could go out to school,” Carroll said.

Collette Pickering, a mother of six, is also appreciative of the donation. “As a single parent, I struggle with them. I appreciate and thank the Father for what they are doing and if they can continue doing it for us we will be appreciative of it,” she said.

School reopens across Guyana on September 3.
